Social Distancing, Sanitizer, and Masks: Tips for Navigating the New Normal at Santa Barbara Athletic Club

Lap pool at Santa Barbara Athletic Club

Since March, our top concern has been the health and safety of our club members. Unfortunately, that meant closing our doors so folks could hunker down and stay home (the free weights would have been too tempting for some!).

Whether you filled your self-quarantine time perfecting a sourdough recipe, binge-watching Schitt’s Creek, or even running a marathon in your own driveway, we’re here for it. But we’re also happy to announce that we’ve reopened! While some things might be a little different, our commitment to keeping Santa Barbara Athletic Club members happy and healthy is as strong as ever.

What to expect:

First things first, what’s your temp?

We’re checking temperatures at the door, so anyone with a temp registering above 100 degrees fahrenheit will not be allowed to enter.

To mask or not to mask?

Masks are this season’s must-have, so we’re asking our members to keep theirs on when they enter the club, are in or walking through a communal space, and while exercising in close quarters. If you’re able to keep six feet between you and other members during your workout, then you can unmask.

Yes, classes are happening.

Group X classes are back! You can sign up for all of your favorite classes through our website. You’ll just need to create a MindBody account to sign up. For your health and safety, we’re limiting our class sizes, so if you’ve got your heart set on that Thursday night LaCore Dance class, register a day before to make sure you’ve got a spot to get your dance on.

Our locker rooms are a work in progress.

Time to put that dry shampoo to good use! While our locker room showers are not open at this time, restrooms are available, and we’ve still got lotion and mouthwash to help you freshen up.

There is an outdoor shower available for rinsing before and after using the pool, and changing cabanas on the pool deck if you need it.

Guidelines for pool, sauna, and steam rooms –

Good news – our pool is open! This is one of those rare times when sharing is not caring though so please limit it to one swimmer per lane if you are swimming laps.

As for the sauna and steam rooms, those are still accessible, but be sure to maintain at least 6 feet from others. Our indoor jacuzzis are closed at this time.

Earthbar is still closed… for now.

We’re working on bringing back everybody’s favorite fuel stop. We’ll let you know as soon as we’re slinging smoothies and local eats again.

Outdoor seating is the new go-to.

Because who wants to sit inside during a sunny Santa Barbara day anyway? To limit “high touch” surfaces in the club, we’ve removed our indoor seating, but outdoor seating areas are still available.

Remember, we’re all in this together

While some of our safety guidelines mean big changes, the little things still count. Wash and sanitize your hands frequently, take a minute or two to wipe down equipment after use, and swap out high fives and handshakes for air fives. In the end, our community holds the key to keeping each other safe.

Welcome back!

We’re living in unprecedented times, and while things might take a little getting used to, we’re incredibly excited to welcome our members back to the club.
