Cancer Well-Fit

The Cancer Well-Fit program was introduced to the Santa Barbara Athletic Club in 1994 by Julie Main, a highly respected, accomplished and inspirational women to people worldwide. She left a lasting legacy behind when she passed away in 2009 after a courageous battle with cancer. The Well-Fit program is one of her many contributions that have been preserved at the Club. Over the last few decades more than 2,000 cancer survivors have completed our supervised exercise program.

The small group exercise program is designed for people who have become de-conditioned or chronically fatigued from cancer or its treatment. Groups meet twice weekly for ten weeks at the Club.

The Program focuses on the following areas of fitness

  • Progressive resistance strength training
  • Specialty strength training
  • Group exercise with one on one training
  • Mind/body conditioning

Out of the responses we obtained from cancer patients, more than 66% believe that attending a supervised exercise program is a form of support network. The reasons for this are easy to see:

Psychological Effects of Cancer

  • Anger (why me?)
  • Fear of unknown, death
  • Loss of self-esteem
  • Loss of body image
  • Loss of independence/control
  • Anxiety
  • Depression
  • Isolation

Psychological Benefits of Exercise

  • Diffuse anger and fear through physical fatigue
  • Improve self esteem and body image
  • Give back and empower independence and body control
  • Reduce anxiety
  • Feel better!
