Plus, incorporating a few laps in your workout routine can do wonders in achieving a full-body workout while aiding joint health.

Read on for the benefits of swimming year-round!

Full body workout:

Swimming is a complete body workout that builds strength and endurance,  all while toning muscles. Swimming is a water resistance exercise, so it’s a wonderful way to move your entire body without putting a lot of strain on your joints and muscles. Whether you take a water aerobics class or swim laps, your body will strengthen nearly every muscle.

Healthy heart:

Swimming is also a great way to strengthen your heart and lungs. With your blood circulation running more effectively throughout the body, there’s less stress on your heart. Plus, studies have shown that swimming can lead to lower blood pressure.

Healthy mind:

Like other aerobic activities, swimming releases mood-boosting endorphins. But swimming has also shown to relieve stress and anxiety, and there are a few theories as to why. One is that the alternating stretch and relaxation of muscles paired with deep breathing is similar to other relaxation techniques such as yoga and progressive muscle relaxation. Also, the repetitive nature of swimming can become a meditative practice for many, providing an ample opportunity to calm the mind and lower stress.

How Swimming Reduces Depression

For starters, it stimulates brain chemicals that foster the growth of nerve cells; exercise also affects neurotransmitters such as serotonin that influence mood and produces ANP, a stress-reducing hormone, which helps control the brain’s response to stress and anxiety. Click here to learn more!

Great option for achy joints:

If you suffer from arthritis or other joint ailments, swimming can be a great exercise that strengthens your body without damaging joints further. What’s more, swimming actually helps joints feel better. Because water makes the limbs buoyant, your body has more support to make movement and get stronger without stressing the joints. Aquatic exercise still has some resistance, the resistance of water is gentler than weights or other strength-training equipment. Make sure to check out our aqua aerobics classes to learn various exercises you can do to strengthen your joints.

Burn more with water:

Swimming is an efficient way to burn more calories per hour than other exercises. If you’re looking to up the ante, swimming can be a great way to lose weight. We recommend our Deep Water Aqua Aerobics group class to help get you in a routine.

Improves sleep:

As we age, many find sleep more difficult. Swimming has shown to help older adults achieve better sleep quality  – especially individuals who need an aerobic activity that’s more accessible than running, cardio classes or cycling, which can be difficult on the joints.

Something for everyone!

No matter your age, fitness level or skillset, swimming is an excellent exercise for everyone. Check out our schedule to see if there’s a group aqua aerobics class that fits your schedule.
